30 seconds interview: Dressmaker

dressmaker band dressmaker band

East London noiseniks Dressmaker have unbuttoned the indie-rock straight jacket to reveal their crazy musical undergarments.

Together, Charles Potashner, David López, Tom Fanthorpe and BenJack have hit on a raucous formula that harnesses an aggressively atmospheric wall-of-sound aesthetic.

By engulfing garage rock in scuzzy shoegaze, they happily thrash about the coat-tails of the mainstream with reckless abandon. Think Echo and the Bunnymen meets The Horrors.

If that whets your appetite, be sure to check out their hellraising new single, Love Me, due 12 March and their corresponding gig at London’s Lock Tavern on the same day.

We embroiled ourselves in the chaos and commotion of Dressmaker for our latest 30 seconds interview, and came away as confused as when we started!

We first started writing music because…
We thought UKIP were becoming a bit too liberal so we decided to leave the party and focus our creative efforts elsewhere.

We have been making music since…
Summer 2013.

Our music is…
Loud, abrasive, noisy, psychedelic. Sometimes melodic.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
The Jesus and Mary Chain, A Place To Bury Strangers, Sonic Youth, The Soft Moon, The Horrors, SWANS, Mumford & Sons.

Our favourite venue is…
Power Lunches, Dalston, East London. A delightfully sweaty DIY basement venue that has played host to many of our live shows.

Music is important because…
ABBA said so.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Michael Gira’s cowboy hat.

Our dream collaboration would be…
With Napalm Death, playing a two hour long free jazz improvisation based on their one second long classic You Suffer.

To try us out, listen to my song…
Love Me, our new single, to be released 12 March. If you can’t wait that long listen to the Glass EP.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Reluctantly re-enacting scenes from 50 Shades of Grey for our unsatisfied partners.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Forgotten entirely. Until 100 years in the future.
