30 seconds interview: Kit Rice

Kit Rice

BRIT School graduate Kit Rice and his vocal chords have been championed by many of dance music’s leading DJs and producers.

When it comes to future-soul, R&B, UK garage and drum and bass, he’s fast-becoming the go-to-vocalist. His recent single Not Enough saw him become a favourite on Rinse FM with garage legend DJ EZ also picking up the tune and giving his support.

Known as something of a musical chameleon, he’s now condensed his love for funk, hip hop and electronica into his new EP, Living Life, a mix of heady beats and idiosyncratic soul.

The title track featuring London based artist First Diamond showcases Kit’s keen ear for fresh sounds with First’s rap acting as a perfect foil to him. Check out our 30 seconds interview with Kit…

I first started writing music because…..
At the age of four I saw a string quartet playing outside my local McDonalds in Penge. The next day at school I came home with a violin and a grade one book!

I have been making music since…
As far back as I can remember. When I was strictly classical I would make up mini snippets of music. In my final year at BRIT School I wrote my first song for voice and piano and I’ve never looked back. I love writing and producing music. Nowadays I live by the rule that if I’m singing it, I wrote it.

My music is…
Inspired. I look to music from my classical background and also from the music my parents listened to while I was growing up; Prince, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Whitney. But I also love brand new music such as Laura Mvula, Kendrick, Young Thug, Rihanna and Beyonce.

You’ll like my music if you listen to…
Jameroquai, Prince, Usher, Beyonce.

My favourite venue is…
I love playing at The Bedford in Balham – it’s a great place to showcase new songs because everyone is there just to listen to music.

Music is important because…
It changes perception and it helps you through life. Music can change your mood, your emotions and your view on life. Artists like Brandy Norwood and Prince speak about so many issues that relate. When I listen to their music it helps, it’s gotten me through some of the toughest moments in my life.

My biggest inspiration is…
Prince. He was fearless. The greatest.

My dream collaboration would be…
Brandy Norwood. I think we could make a record that would change the world.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Living Life.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Teaching music. I love teaching. One of the greatest things about life is giving back.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Living life baby. I just hope to keep riding the wave.
