Composer and radio presenter George Webley has died aged 53.
Webley, popularly known as ‘Big George’, was the presenter of the weekday overnight programme on BBC London 94.9. He had presented the show for the past five years. He had previously worked for BBC Three Counties Radio.
He had a long career as a musician and composed some well-known TV theme tunes, including Have I Got News For You and Room 101, and he also performed and arranged the opening and closing theme tune of comedy series The Office, Handbags and Gladrags.
As a radio presenter Big George had a dedicated following. His weekday overnight programme was popular with night workers, including taxi drivers. About 300 London taxi drivers paid tribute to him by holding a minute’s silence last night at All Souls Church, near Broadcasting House.
The cause of his death is not known. He is survived by his partner, the broadcaster JoAnne Good, his children Harry, Twig, Clare and Natalie Jayne, and three grandchildren.
