Riot-hit indie labels seek fans’ help

Music fans are being urged to buy album downloads from the independent record labels that lost their stock in Monday’s warehouse fire.

Rioters in London set the Sony DADC warehouse ablaze, which housed  stock held by distributor PIAS on behalf of scores of independent labels, including Domino Records, XL Recordings, One Little Indian, Rough Trade, Ninja Tune and Warp. None of the stock survived.

Physical record sales are still vital to the independent music industry, and many smaller labels could face closure as a result of the fire. Industry association AIM is now urging fans to buy up all retail stock left in record shops and show their support by purchasing digital downloads from those artists and labels affected by the fire.

AIM’s chief executive Alison Wenham said: ‘This is a disaster for the music community, but with the fans’ help, labels and artists will survive. Please show your support for the music community by buying a digital album from an independent label today.’

Meanwhile, Sony DADC has announced that it is now up and running an emergency service from a new control room in Enfield, North London, and will be able to start shipping some orders with a temporary distribution partner within the next week.

In a statement, PIAS said: ‘We continue to work with them [Sony DADC] to minimise the impact on the business, a number one priority for all labels and clients.

‘We wish to thank everyone for the overwhelming messages of support,’ it added.

However, Sunday Best owner Rob Da Bank told NME: ‘Nothing’s going to be sold for months, and I don’t know what will happen. There’s no way of distributing records. My back catalogues are all gone. I can’t afford to get another run done for older releases.

‘Everyone’s going to have to think about the next few months. It’s a reminder of how on a knife edge these things are – some labels and shops are going to be really affected by it. It just shows how precarious the indie thing is.’

Independent music fans, led by the musician Fion Chadd, have begun organising a fundraiser for the labels who lost stock in the fire. Check out their website Label Love for more info.
