Calling pianists aged between 16 and 30: applications are now open for the 2019 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, with a first prize of £15,000 plus concerto performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra!
Applicants can apply via video or live auditions, with the latter taking place at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama on 18 and 25 November 2018.
Applications must include one major cadenza by any composer, and two solo works by different composers and from different periods. Video applications must have been recorded after November 2016 and should be unedited.
The competition – which relaunched in 2005 – has a history stretching back over 100 years and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014 under the artistic direction of pianist Frank Wibaut.
It is set to become a biennial event after next year’s competition. Wibaut said: ‘The most exciting thing about going every two years is that we’ll have the time to develop the competition and make it better.
‘We’ll be able to make it more exhilarating for the audience and offer more opportunities – including concerts – for our contestants. Going biennial will also help us develop our outreach and education programme. And it will help us develop our very important relationship with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.’
The 2019 competition will take place from 21 Feburary to 2 March 2019 at the White Rock Theatre in Hastings. The closing date for video applications is 26 November 2018, with an 8 November 2018 deadline for the live auditions.
