ISM launches musicians’ counselling service

mental health

The ISM Members Fund, a sister charity of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, is now offering counselling as part of a new suite of services for musicians.

The programme, operated by Health Assured, is confidential and includes telephone counselling, face-to-face counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

The pilot phase will run between July and December 2019 on a first-come-first-served basis. Other new services will be announced in the autumn.

Deborah Annetts, chief executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, said: ‘Looking after your mental health is just as important as your physical health – and we know first-hand from our members the challenges out there for everyday musicians.

‘The music sector has a high level of self-employed workers and in the largely unregulated gig economy, where short-term contracts or freelance work is prevalent, there are high levels of stress and anxiety. We hope that this new service not only helps our members take control of their mental wellbeing but contributes to the discussion of mental health in our enriching, but challenging, industry.’
