The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) has announced the release of ‘How to…Negotiate a contract’ the latest resource in its ‘How to…’ series.
The ‘How to…’ series follows the practical industry advice offered at the ISM’s The Empowered Musician event held in October 2018, which highlighted the skills and knowledge musicians need to succeed in their music career.
‘How to…Negotiate a contract’ is written by lawyer Victoria Barrett of VLT Legal and provides music creators with guidance on the contract process.
The guide features top tips for getting the best out of a contract and the basic tools to aid musicians in negotiations.
Barrett is a music & IP legal consultant and founder of VLT Legal, and after working as a freelance oboist and in artist management, Victoria studied law and qualified as a solicitor.
She then moved onto the Music Publishers Association before forming VLT Legal, which since 2008 has provided a broad range of intellectual property law services to clients in the music and creative industries as well as all types of small to medium-sized businesses.
‘How to…Negotiate a contract’ builds on the ISM’s previous resources, ‘How to… Connect with your digital audience’, ‘How to… Write a DIY release marketing plan’, ‘How to… Work with an artist manager’ and ‘How to… Play at a Festival’.
The ISM also plans to release a ‘How to…Make a recording’ guide in 2020.
Extracts from each of the resources can be accessed for free on the ISM website and ISM members can download the guides in full at ism.org/howto.
Deborah Annetts, chief executive, ISM, says: ‘Take control of your career with our resources produced in collaboration with music industry experts. The How to… series builds on the practical industry advice on offer at The Empowered Musician event, highlighting the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your music career.’
