Interview: Tom Walker

‘This place is magical. It’s such an honour to be here, I’m buzzing,’ enthuses Tom Walker at the prospect of playing Glastonbury.

His spot on the bill at the incomparable Somerset festival, seems to be the icing on the cake for the singer songwriter for which 2019 has been a breakout year.

Tom began a ripple effect in 2017 with the release of his soring single Leave a Light On, which achieved the number seven spot in the UK before impacting charts the world over.

Roll on to March of this year and the young troubadour unleashed his debut long player, What a Time to be Alive, which went straight to the top spot in the UK before selling over a million copies worldwide.

The bright poignant melodies and earthy delivery of Tom’s tracks later earned him the Best British Breakthrough Award at this year’s Brit Awards.

Nevertheless, the success hasn’t just landed in his lap, having already toured heavily across the UK, Europe, Australia and Mexico.

And the hard graft hasn’t stopped there, as following his performances on the John Peel Stage and at the PRS for Music tent at Glastonbury 2019 Tom is ready to hit the road again.

We caught up with him down at Worthy Farm to get his highlights from an exceptional year, touring tips and his songwriting secrets…
