Interview: Bat for Lashes

Bat For Lashes 1

Since emerging in 2006 with her first album Fur and Gold, Bat for Lashes has never strayed far from an awards ceremony. Her mantelpiece must be cluttered with statuettes from around the world, including the ASCAP Vanguard Award and a 2010 Ivor Novello Award – and she’s had more nominations than we’ve had hot dinners.

The Bat, aka Natasha Khan, released her startling third album The Haunted Man in the autumn and has since been nominated for the Best Female Brit Award and an Ivor Novello Award for the album’s stark standout track Laura. The album has seen Natasha streamline her usual mix of organic and electronic sounds to devastating effect, bringing her doe-eyed words and melodies to the fore.

Last weekend she wowed the crowds at London festival Field Day and will be bringing her off-kilter pop to US audiences as the support slot on Depeche Mode’s North American tour (see below for the European tour dates).

We spoke to Natasha at The Ivors to discover how her songwriting evolved for the new album and how she tackled her first proper collaboration on the track Laura. She also reveals her weakness for eighties power ballads and explains her weirdest songwriting moments…
