Interview: Richie Hawtin

RichiehawtinwebAs a DJ, producer, record label owner, Richie Hawtin has done more than most to help put electronic music firmly on the map.

Born in the UK but raised in Canada, just across the river from Detroit, Richie has built himself a career as a restless innovator, a music maker who has always one eye on the horizon, constantly looking to the future for the next trend or piece of technology to propel his creations forward.

From Ibiza residencies and multimedia installations to his pioneering work as Plastikman, Richie is as skilled at tearing up a dancefloor as he is weaving sparse electronic patterns in a museum exhibition. His latest work in the Plastikman guise – Ex – was inspired by a performance at the Guggenheim in New York.

With such an illustrious CV, it’s not surprising that he was the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the recent AIM Awards. We managed to catch up with Richie at the event to quiz him on EDM, new technology and why being independent has made him who he is…
