BASCA launches new commission fee survey

BASCABASCA has launched a survey on classical and jazz commission fees to help composers, publishers and commissioners determine new charging guidelines.

Publishers, composers and commissioners are invited to provide information for the years 2010 to 2011. The survey is open for 90 days and the findings will be made public in the New Year.

Previously the organisation produced annual commission fee guidelines including suggested charging rates.

However, in 2005 the Office of Fair Trading advised that BASCA should not continue producing the guidelines as they could have too much influence on the pricing behaviour of new commissions.

BASCA now undertakes a regular survey to gather historical data on the level of commission fees which have been charged. It says its aim is to ‘present the results of the survey not as a recommendation on price, but to help those concerned to calculate their own cost price structures and enable them to establish their selling prices independently’.
