30 seconds interview: Autumns

autumns music

Autumns is the uncompromising guise of Derry-based aural experimentalist Christian Donaghey.

Swapping his studies in marine geoscience for the lure of dystopian electronics, Christian has hit on a seriously out-there analogue sound, reinvented for the 21st century.

Parallels to the cosmic claustrophobia of early Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire are immediately obvious, but there’s another, more foreboding influence as Christian uses his music to work through personal anger.

On his new cassette release, Das Nichts, his crumpled electronics and disrupted guitars are driven by furrowed beats and overarching white noise.

It’s an intensely physical sound that plays havoc with your eardrums and gets the adrenalin pumping on overtime.

And, with tracks clocking in at anything from three to 19 minutes, he’s happy to let his wigged out vibes take as long as they need to properly percolate.

With the flagrant disregard for melody favoured by the likes of Demdike Stare and Untold, this is the sound of an artist bent on pushing the boundaries of analogue electronics and broken techno.

We caught up with Christian before Das Nichts dropped on ace Glasgow label Clan Destine Records (LAPS, The KVB) a couple of weeks ago to learn more…
