What? Leftfield electro-pop.
From where? Born and raised in Paris, before moving to London at 18.
What’s the story? Zilla is a classically trained pianist turned pop surrealist making her mark in 2017. Having previously written for the likes of Tinie Tempah and Wretch32 alongside hiphop collective Yogi, she’s hooked up with renowned producer Matthew Herbert for her first run of singles released on his Accidental label.
Debut track Get Your Way got off to a flying start, featuring in Elle UK’s #MoreWomen video campaign and picking up support from BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and RadioX’s Jon Kennedy.
Turning objects and everyday sounds into her own stockpile of instruments, Zilla forms beats out of lightbulbs and samples anything from workers drilling outside to the tape of a space echo machine in her off-kilter explorations.
Now with latest single The Sleepwalker, she’s continuing her probe of avant garde pop sonics, unleashing whirring sounds, glitchy beats and dream-like lyrics taken from recordings of her own sleep-talking.
Never straying too far from an infectious hook, this is intriguing alt-pop destined for big things…
Sounds like? Parisian nonchalance meets dancefloor fun.
Predicted to? Keep you on your toes with strange sound samples.
Must hear? The Sleepwalker.
