Sheffield’s Warp Records has been the beating heart of the British electronic scene for nearly 30 years.
Coming to life in co-founders Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell’s bedrooms, its early releases launched the careers of Aphex Twin, Autechre, LFO, Squarepusher and Boards of Canada, many of whom are still buzzing loudly today.
Although Rob sadly passed away in 2001, the label continued in the same vein, with Steve signing and supporting a new wave of class acts.
Fast forward to 2017 and artists as diverse as Flying Lotus, Battles, Oneohtrix Point Never, Hudson Mohawke, Clark, Bibio, LoneLady and Brian Eno all call the label home.
Last week, Steve was given the Pioneer Award at the 2017 AIM Awards, acknowledging his rare position in UK electronic music.
Here, he looks back on three decades of dance music and ahead to what’s next…
