Who? United Vibrations consist of brothers Ahmad, Kareem, and Yussef Dayes plus Wayne Francis II.
What? According to the collective, they ‘are messengers from Inner Space. They travel the globe seeking those who are ready to rediscover the Golden Ratio’.
From where? The cosmic realm of South London.
What’s the story?
It’s jazz but not as we know it. United Vibrations deal loosely in energised punk-afro-jazz, taking musical pointers from a vivid aural palette including Fela Kuti, John Coltrane and Weather Report all the way through to 4 Hero and Talking Heads.
Since they emerged out of the mist of the early 2010s, they’ve become a potent musical force, winning fans in the likes of Theo Parrish and Gilles Peterson as well as Jamie Cullum and Tony Allen. They describe their sound as ‘12tone’, an expansion of 2tone music mixing up ska and punk, plus a healthy dollop of myriad sonic flavours.
Their latest record, The Myth of the Golden Ratio, is arguably their best yet, propelling them around the world and seeing the collective take their energetic live show to various festivals and stages including Dimensons, Outlook and the World Music Expo in Spain.
They were supported by PRS Foundation’s International Showcase Fund to perform at the latter event and will be packing their bags again in March to journey to the US for the first time to play an ace showcase of UK jazz talent at this year’s SXSW.
Sounds like? If you’re fans of the new wave of UK jazz such as The Comet is Coming or Yussuf Kamal, or musical masters such as John Coltrane and Fela Kuti, then you’ll feel these vibrations in your ears…
Predicted to? Own SXSW when they perform as part of the Jazz re:freshed Outernational showcase alongside GoGo Penguin and Moses Boyd. The Americans need to get ready…
Must hear? Listen to Grow from the album below…
