30 seconds interview: Natalie McCool

Scouse pop warrior Natalie McCool likes nothing more than an epic synth line and a tangy hook.

The LIPA graduate first grabbed the spotlight back in 2013 when she released her self-titled debut album, which featured collaborations with Bernard Butler.

Since then she’s cemented her charged sound, happily tiptoeing between glacial Scandi-pop and pliable electronica.

On her new single Fortress, she’s on a mission to create ‘pop with a brain’, skipping from airy to gutsy with one swoop of crushing vocal melody.

To celebrate its release on 22 April, she’s just headed out for a string of intimate gigs at her fans’ houses.

She’s been busy recording her audience singing along to Fortress and will compile them together for a fan version of the track that she’ll release at the end of the tour (see below for remaining dates).

We were lucky enough to grab 30 seconds with Natalie before she headed off to find out more about her wayward pop phonetics…

I have been making music since…
I was 14 when I wrote my first song and played my first gig!

My music is…
Pop with a brain.

You’ll like me if you listen to…
Sia, Lorde, Tove Lo, Charli XCX.

My favourite venue is…
No longer standing…RIP The Kazimier in Liverpool xx

Music is important because…
I think it’s the most emotional form of self-expression.

My biggest inspiration is…
People and their relationships with each other.

My dream collaboration would be…
With Jeff Buckley or Jack Garratt.

To try me out, listen to my track…
Cardiac Arrest.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Working for MI5.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Working for MI5.
