30 seconds interview: Clubs and Spades

Clubs and Spades

Clubs and Spades Sheffield collective Clubs and Spades blur the lines between hip hop, funk and punk using a mix of live instruments and fiery beats to drive their fresh sound.

The crew are no strangers to the music biz and this experience shows. Andy Nicholson was previously the bass guitarist for the Arctic Monkeys while the two producers (Andy and Jamie) have worked with artists including Tom Prior and Terri Walker as Sticky Blood.

MCs Matic Mouth and Shinobi put a defiantly UK spin on a US sound, via rapping in broad Yorkshire accents but they’re speaking in a global language which is proving increasingly popular with music lovers.

Their new single Clearer Coast was premiered by Charlie Sloth on his Radio 1 Rap Show and he then went on to make it his Record Of The Week on 1Xtra. Support slots with the hip hop royalty including Public Enemy, Pharoahe Monch and M.O.P show the kind of company this gang are increasingly keeping.

We caught up with Matic Mouth for 30 seconds on how this crew are coming straight out of Yorkshire…

I first started writing music because…
BIGGIE made me do it.

I have been making music since…
I had rhythm, birth I suppose.

Our music is…
The shit!!

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
Music with honesty and authenticity.

Our favourite venue is…
The Plug in Sheffield.

Music is important because…
It’s my job, and I love it.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Life.

Our dream collaboration would be…
With Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. Although, this is my answer today, this changes all the time.

To try us out, listen to our song…
The Get Up.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Talking about the music we want to make.

In 10 years’ time we want to be…
Making more of it, in a progressive way of course.
