30 Seconds interview: Deafkid

Deafkid interview

Deafkid are a London two-piece that deliver a perfect blend of intriguing electronica and indie-pop, drawing upon a range of disciplines and genres to produce a fresh new sound.

The band, Chris and Flo, are label darlings of London indie imprint Tape Club Records, also home to Laurel Collective and Peter and Kerry. They started out working with hip-hop artist Ghostpoet, providing some production on his Mercury Music Prize nominated album Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam. Following a stint in his live band, they got together to produce deft electronica under the Deafkid moniker.

Their debut double A-side single Talk/Pig was released at the end of 2012, gaining support from NME and Clash as well as being picked up by radio DJ Zane Lowe for his Next Hype Record slot.

They follow up their debut with another double A-side single in the form of Vigilante/Horns through Tape Club on 15 July. We caught up with the pair before its release to find out more about the curious Afrobeat flavours that thread through their experimental electro-pop rhythms.

We first started writing music because…
We though we could achieve something we’d be proud of by mixing our music influences together.

We have been making music since…
February 2012.

Our music is…
A blend of electronica, experimental and pop genres.

You’ll like us if you listen to…
A lot of different music genres.

Our favourite venue is…
Jazz Club Hipnoza, Katowice, Poland.

Music is important because…
It makes you forget about everything else and it’s a great communicator, to both the conscious and subconscious.

Our biggest inspiration is…
The pressure of trying to earn enough for rent.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Someone from an entirely different world with entirely different experiences and musical traditions.

To try us out, listen to our song…
Vigilante.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Empty husks.

In 10 years time we want to be…
Able to answer this question!
