30 Seconds interview: Echaskech

EchaskechforwebEchaskech are Hackney-based pair Dom Hoare and Andy Gillham, a duo who draw on the best bits of rave, ambient, classical and bass music to draw their sonic palette.

Signed to Just Music, home of fellow electronic auteurs Jon Hopkins and Laki Mera, they’ve used the label as a base from which to launch themselves into their musical experiments. Over the years, they’ve perfected an ace blend of the delicate and grimy to come up with music which is as suited to a dirty warehouse rave as it is to domestic listening. Think the BBC’s Radiophonic workshop painting the town red with some early Warp artists and you’re getting close to nailing their music down.

The trajectory of their musical career has been a steady one with the pair taking their time over their long players and hooking up with the likes of Max Cooper and Roots Manuva as well as label mate Hopkins.

In the live arena, they make even more sense, teaming up with visual artist Mach V, syncing visuals to audio as accompaniment which has led to performances at Secret Garden Party, The Big Chill and Corsica Studios.

Origin is the pair’s third album and sees them throwing analogue sounds, acoustic guitars and field recordings into what is their most accomplished and exciting release to date. They mix up the otherworldly and melodies like no other…

We first started making music because
We literally couldn’t find what we wanted to hear.

We have been making music since…
‘Time’.

Our music is…
Hooded, dark, loved up, epic.

You’ll like us if you listen to…
Scuba, Plaid, Jon Hopkins, Max Cooper or Ulrich Schnauss.

Our favourite venue is…
Village Underground or Corsica Studios. Brixton Academy for big boy acts. Also Union Chapel or St John’s Hackney – you can’t beat the atmosphere of an old church for gigs.

Music is important because…
It helps you forget the bad and think of the good.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Probably live techno done well.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Anyone dedicated and passionate enough to put everything in to it. We know people who have worked with ‘legends’ and have got nothing decent out of it. We’d rather work with an unknown who could bring something special.

To try us out, listen to our track…
Form / Function.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Bored.

In 10 years time we want to be…
Alive.
