30 Seconds interview: Ghetts

GhettsforwebMany musicians face obstacles in their career but for East London MC Ghetts this is perhaps truer than most.

It was only after a troubled time as a teenager and a stint behind bars that he began focusing on his music. While inside he embarked on a music and drama course which inspired him to spend more time on his rhymes and join the infamous N.A.S.T.Y crew once out in the real world.

Alongside the likes of Kano, Stormin’ and occasional guests Jammer and Wiley, Ghetts earnt a reputation as a fierce MC on the pirate airwaves of London’s East End and in underground raves. He released a series of mixtapes including 2000 & Life, Ghetto Gospel, Freedom of Speech and The Calm Before The Storm and toured with the likes of Mike Skinner (The Streets) and Kano.

After taking some time out to be a Dad, Ghetts recently entered the music industry fray again. This renewed sense of purpose saw him hook up with start-up label Disrupt. The result is his new single Party Animal (featuring long-time collaborator Kano) and his forthcoming and long-awaited debut album Rebel With a Cause. If the single is anything to go by, it’s looking like 2014 could be the year Ghetts not only comes good but gets the mainstream recognition he deserves…

I first started writing music because…
It was an escape from all the rubbish going on when I was growing up.

I have been making music since…
Since 2003 – my first major release was Top 3 Selected.

My music is…
A reflection of what I’m going through at any given time.

You’ll like my music if you listen to…
A dose of reality!

My favourite venue is…
I don’t have one, but I have a great memory of playing BBC Radio 1Xtra Live at a stadium in Leeds. That is a highlight for me.

Music is important because…
It can change lives.

My biggest inspiration is…
The world.

My dream collaboration would be…
Marvin Gaye.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Feel Inside.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
This was plan a and plan b!

In 10 years time I want to be…
Alive.
