30 seconds interview: Jagaara

Jagarra

JagarraJane (vocals/guitar), Cat (keys/synth) and Ruth (guitar) are Jagaara, three sisters from North London weaned on everything from Kate Bush to Blood Orange, Lykke Li and film soundtracks.

It’s an eclectic mix shown off in an array of releases fusing their love for folk, electronica and reverb heavy pop.

After cutting their teeth in their bedrooms, the trio found themselves working with Catherine (CJ) Marks (Howling Bells, Wolf Alice, Foals) to record their debut EP Faultline – released in late 2014. The EP got the ears of influencers and tastemakers fluttering and all bodes well for the rest of this year.

Their forthcoming Record Store Day (RSD) release, In the Dark, is their most accomplished work to date. A swirling, ethereal ripple of a song, it’s full of harmony and synthesisers reminiscent of Haim or London Grammar at their best. With this new record out on the vinyl on RSD (18 April), they trio will be heading out to take on the festival season with dates lined up at Bestival, Field Day, The Great Escape and Secret Garden Party…

We first started writing music because…
We were eating our feelings and needed to find a different way to express ourselves.

We have been making music since…
We were in the womb. But as Jagaara, about three years ago.

Our music is…
Soul searching.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
Good music.

Our favourite venue is…
Village Underground, where we’re supporting Jack Garratt in May.

Music is important because…
As Marilyn Manson once said, it’s the strongest form of magic.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Our friends.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Nick Cave, or Justin Timberlake. Both together would be interesting.

To try us out, listen to our song…
In the Dark, which we’re releasing on vinyl next month, but you can already hear it on our Soundcloud page.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Restless.

In 10 years time we want to be…
Not living with our parents anymore (as awesome as they are).#
