Smooth-as-honey vocals and a timeless, honest sound: BBC Radio 2 A-listed singer-songwriter Kerri Watt is a name to watch.
With a year of international touring and writing under her belt, Kerri has returned with new single Old School Love; a love song that pays homage to a ‘classic and timeless’ sound with its simple production, blissfully mellow instrumentation and those gorgeously soft vocals to wrap your ears around.
Her first two singles Long Way Home and The Wild were received to critical acclaim, both receiving playlist spots on BBC Radio 2, while the remix of her track You hit Number 1 on Hype Machine.
Fresh from performing alongside Embrace in July, the East West Records signed artist grabbed 30 seconds with us to talk about her new single and what’s next for her.
What was the first song you developed an obsession for?
Blame It On The Boogie – The Jacksons. I used to dance around to this song in my cot as a toddler!
What’s the first gig you went to?
The Spice Girls at the SECC Glasgow.
What’s the first instrument you ever got hold of?
An old piano in my Gran’s dining room.
What is your worst musical habit?
Overplaying on the piano.
What’s the best piece of musical advice you’ve ever been given?
Sounds obvious but… ‘Breathe.’ It’s easy to forget to breathe when you’re concentrating or nervous and it makes you tense up. As soon as you remember to relax, everything sounds and feels better.
Where do you discover new music?
Going to gigs and talking to other songwriters about who they’ve been working with.
What’s your favourite venue?
Birmingham Symphony Hall but if I ever got to play at Red Rocks, I’m pretty sure that would be my favourite.
Who is your current favourite band/artist?
Nikhil D’Souza – my friend and fellow label mate. You must check out his Youtube vid for Still In Love – magic.
What inspirations outside of music impact your songwriting?
Lately I’ve been reading old poetry for inspiration – and I can always rely on eavesdropping on your conversations in line at Starbucks!
What track of yours best represents your sound?
Long Way Home.
What’s next for you?
My new single, Old School Love is out now, so still doing promo for that. After that I have a trip to Nashville and then my first headline UK tour in November!
Old School Love is out now on East West Records.
