30 seconds interview: My Pleasure

My Pleasure, Adult Teeth

My Pleasure is an experimental pop solo project born and bred in Hull, the new City of Culture.

Multi-instrumentalist Lewis Young helms the enterprise, creating a weird and wonderful world that carries echoes of Whitey and LCD Soundsystem.

Through just a couple of releases, Lewis has aired a distinct knack for frank lyrics and concise arrangements, which demand repeat plays.

By distilling the best bits of sixties’ pop with the overfamiliarity of kitchen-sink king Darren Hayman, he’s hit on a winning combo that’s already charmed a flock of BBC Radio DJs.

Alongside his solo work, Lewis champions likeminded acts through his Adult Teeth record label, which boasts dream-pop quintet La Bete Blooms and ambient of Mt Judge. Check out the Adult Teeth sampler for more.

We caught up with him as he prepares for the release of his latest single, Would You Still Love Me, on 9 February to learn more about his sound…

I have been making music since…
About the age of 12, when I first took guitar lessons. I didn’t start writing songs until three years later. Awful, awful songs.

My music is…
Experimental pop music with surreal lyrics, disco-influenced basslines and a voice that wavers from being in tune to far from it.

You’ll like me if you listen to…
The Fall, Jeffrey Lewis, LCD Soundsystem, Ty Segall and Parquet Courts. Despite being proud of my English roots, my taste in music is largely American.

My favourite venue is…
The New Adelphi Club in Hull. It’s a 200-capacity, cosy place where I was able to hone my craft from being 16 years old, thanks to the accommodating owner, Paul Jackson. Without the venue, I wouldn’t be making music, and I wouldn’t have seen countless amazing acts from all around the world in such an intimate setting.

Music is important because…
It can change your mood in a matter of seconds, and change your life forever. That sounds a bit romantic, doesn’t it? Oh dear.

My biggest inspiration is…
I guess I would say Jeffrey Lewis, in the way that he made his own way in the music industry for a long time. Recording lo-fi demos and playing open mic nights, building his following in New York and beyond.

My dream collaboration would be…
Not so much a collaboration, but I’d love to be a member of The Fall, even if only for one gig. They’ve had something like 50+ members so maybe it’s a dream that’s within reach.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Living With You. It’s my personal favourite and I was humbled to have it picked up by BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 2, which makes me believe that other people like it too. Okay, so Radio 2 played it at 4.30 in the morning, but still…

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Miserable.

In 10 years’ time I want to be…
Retired at 36, thanks to PRS royalties.
