30 seconds interview: Robyn Sherwell

RobynsherwellwebOriginally from the Channel Islands, now based in London, Robyn Sherwell is a fresh sounding singer songwriter with a canny way with eighties-flecked R&B.

It may sound like a road well travelled with the likes of Jessie Ware already inhabiting this musical space, but Robyn’s debut single Love Somebody is a total pop gem, shimmering and sultry in equal measures. It’s emotive, heart wringing stuff and bodes well for her debut album. It was a string of YouTube covers (including an ace version of SBTRKT’s Hold on) which first saw her name bandied around by tastemakers. Now, after gigs at the Great Escape and numerous plays by BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne,  Robyn is holed up in the studio with producer David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything) working on a first full length effort. Fall in love with her first single below…

I first started writing music because…
It gave me a means of expression. I’d always loved music, I loved songwriters who could shine a light on their experience or emotions and articulate something I could relate to.

I have been making music since…
I was a teenager and started thinking I had some important stuff to express (!). I discovered quite early that writing and being creative can be very cathartic.

My music is…
From the heart. Mainly concerned with love and relationships, up to now – I write about what I’m feeling or whatever is bothering me. There’s an honesty about it – and I hope that comes across.

You’ll like my music if you listen to…
Fink, Foy Vance, Jessie Ware, James Blake.

My favourite venue is…
The Royal Albert Hall – there is something a bit magical about the space there. It’s big but still retains intimacy, I’ve loved seeing acts perform there! Intimacy is definitely a factor in the kind of performance I really enjoy.

Music is important because…
It moves people. I think it helps people, it can articulate our experience of life and the human condition, and is such a rich medium for doing so – there’s something out there for everyone, if you care enough to find it. I really believe it’s in our DNA to respond to music.

My biggest inspiration is…
Tough question – I’m not inspired by one thing. Other musicians and songwriters are a crucial inspiration, but also my surroundings, traveling, relationships and challenges, it all inspires me.

My dream collaboration would be…
I had wanted to work with David Kosten for a long time and got the good fortune to do so for my upcoming album – that was pretty cool. I wish I could have met Jeff Buckley, he was a songwriter I really idolised growing up. There’s also Prince! He must be everyone’s dream collaboration. I’d love to see how that would turn out.

To try me out, listen to my song…
Love Somebody, out now and available everywhere.

If I wasn’t making music I’d be…
Probably a writer. Maybe an acerbic journalist or aspiring novelist.

In 10 years time I want to be…
Still writing and making music, and just living life as fully as I can. I hope I have travelled to way more places in 10 years time.
