30 seconds interview: Stretch Trio

stretchtriowebJazz three piece Stretch Trio have come far in 2014.

Featuring the talents of Andy French (saxophone), Calvin Travers (guitar) and Tom Higham (drums), the group originally got together in Lancashire before heading over the hills to hone their skills in Leeds.

The band spent the summer recording their debut album, Antithesis, a collection of songs blending their love for ambient electronica, experimental jazz and rock. It raised their profile and led to the group winning Help Musicians UK’s Peter Whittingham Jazz Award in December. They received a £4,000 development prize after wowing an expert panel including trombonist Dennis Rollins, saxophonist Pete Wareham, and Justin McKenzie of London promoter Jazz re:freshed.

Early in 2014 they were given the opportunity to perform at the Gateshead International Jazz Festival after receiving the prestigious ‘Jazz North Introduces’ prize. The band shared the bill with the likes of Bill Frisell, Esperanza Spaulding and Polar Bear while receiving two days of mentoring with internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Ian Dixon. The group are now prepping more material for 2015…

We first started writing music because…
We want get away from standards playing and develop our unique sound for this project.

We have been making music since…
Summer of 2013.

Our music is…
A blend of electronic, drum and bass, jazz and rock.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
Bonobo, Mehliana, Melt Yourself Down, Metheny, Now Vs. Now.

Our favourite venue is…
The Sage in Gateshead. We played here earlier this year and had a lovely experience, both with the sound and the atmosphere.

Our biggest inspiration is…
The Stretch Movement in America. This is a project that sees jazz musicians adapt their playing style to perform at rock venues and reach a larger audience.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Touring with Bonobo or Caribou.

To try us out, listen to my song…
Solstice.

If we weren’t making music we’d be…
Homeless and obsolete.

In 10 years time we want to be…
Reaching a much larger audience and have written a lot more original material.
