30 seconds interview: Thought Forms

Thought FormsThought Forms are a Bristolian three-piece whose atmospheric shoegaze sounds like a lost collaboration between early nineties indie stalwarts Kevin Shields, David Pajo and Liz Fraser.

Ghost Mountain, their latest album, pulls in many different directions, spinning from the raw energy of Sonic Youth to complex sonic layering reminiscent of post-rock pioneers Mogwai. It was released on Geoff Barrow’s Invada record label earlier this year to much critical acclaim.

Over the last nine years, Charlie Romijn (guitars/vocals), Deej Dhariwal (guitars/vocals) and drummer Guy Metcalfe have cultivated quite a reputation for their colossal live set  which they’ve taken to the ATP Festival I’ll Be Your Mirror and on a US tour supporting Portishead.

We caught up with Deej ahead of the busy festival season to find out what makes the band tick…

We first started song writing because…
We love listening to music and enjoy jamming.

We have been making music since…
2004 and next year will be our 10th anniversary.

Our music is…
A mixture of everything we love… It can be big and angry or delicate and euphoric.

You’ll like our music if you listen to…
Emeralds, Sonic Youth, Godspeed, Slint, Sebadoh and My Bloody Valentine

Our favourite venue is…
The Croft (RIP) in Bristol.

Music is important because…
It’s a direct link to the soul. If you really have something to give it will spill out and connect with people.

Our biggest inspiration is…
Touring! We love traveling and meeting new people/music.

Our dream collaboration would be…
Jamming with the Velvet Underground.

If we weren’t making music…
We’d be doing something creative like art, filmmaking, and cork sniffing

In 10 years time we want to be…
Touring the world and releasing music that pushes us forward as musicians.
