Skinny Pelembe

Who?

First name Skinny, second name Pelembe. Skinny Pelembe.

What?

Down-tempo, abstract, trip-hop stylings.

From Where?

Born in Johannesburg, raised in Doncaster, now residing in London.

What’s the Story?

From Johannesburg to Donny (Doncaster, to the uninitiated) and then down to London – Skinny Pelembe’s musical quest has taken him near half way around the globe.

Each mile travelled seems to have made Skinny a little wiser and a little more musical, clocking in no less than four separate musical proficiencies, super-slick production talents and vocal chops to match.

Having signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownsood Recordings, the genre-splicing polymath came out of the gate by releasing a slew of gorgeously abstract singles in early 2018, the latest of which signifies a real zenith for the trip-hop troubadour.

Pulsating, unusual and infectiously funky, I Wanna Be Your Prisoner bares an inimitable aesthetic and demonstrates an untapped oil field of artistic potential bubbling below the surface.

Since receiving support from just about every single viable BBC media outlet, Skinny has announced his maiden UK tour this September – a voyage that sees him traversing the length and breadth of the nation, included a trip back to deepest, darkest Yorkshire.

Sounds like?

An effortlessly cool, genre-bending cocktail of boundary-stretching hip-hop.

Predicted to?

Release some of the best trip-hop of 2018 to the further adoration and love of the collective BBC hive mind.

Must hear?

Ice-cold banger and latest single ‘I Wanna Be Your Prisoner’ – featuring a little help from Hejira’s Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne’s on vocals.
