girl ray band

Who? Girl Ray are Poppy Hankin (guitar/vocals), Iris McConnell (drums) and Sophie Moss (bass).

What? Vivid psychedelic pop.

From where? North London.

What’s the story? The girls joined forces as Girl Ray back in 2015, releasing their first track, Ghosty, via SoundCloud while studying for their A-levels.

Since then, they’ve been quick off the mark, beaming a swathe of golden pop sounds into the ether and signing to Moshi Moshi for their first proper single release, Trouble.

The track, which was playlisted on BBC Radio 6 Music and pricked our ears, plus those of Stereogum and DIY magazine, was a perfect dose of pint-sized psychedelic pop.

Part primetime Gorkys Zygotic Mynci, part Veronica Falls, it embodied the winsome spirit of the girls’ impeccable songwriting skills and set them on course for greatness.

Follow-up singles Stupid Things and most recent Preacher did not disappoint, revealing the depth and breadth of their technicolour sounds in full lo-fi glory.

Now with debut album Earl Grey scheduled for 4 August, we’re chomping at the bit for more!

The trio have already toured with Slow Club, Ezra Furman and labelmates Teleman, and are preparing to headline their biggest ever London show at the Old Blue Last on 23 May.

If you can’t catch them then, they’ll be bringing their divine hooks to this year’s Great Escape, Green Man and End of the Road festivals. Don’t miss out!

Sounds like? C86 is alive and well in North London.

Predicted to? Win over hearts and minds when their debut LP lands.

Must hear? Latest gem Preacher
