Who? Julia Sykes (vocals/synth), Kris Taylor (guitar) and William Brown (drums).
What? Dark and dreamy electronic pop.
Current habitat? South London.
What’s the story? PLYA (pronounced ‘playa’, the Spanish for beach) is the brainchild of Julia Sykes, whose Mallorcan/Moroccan upbringing and English/Brazillian heritage makes for a transatlantic super-charge of flavours.
Inspired by a trip Stateside where they fell in love with the Californian coastline, the trio set to work with LA producer Kyle Moorman to develop their sound, crafting debut single Thinking Of You in a matter of hours. Since then, there’s been two more singles and stacks of praise already from the likes of BBC Introducing London, Vevo and PRS Foundation, who awarded Julia with a Women Make Music grant.
Layering dark synth waves with swirling guitars and commanding pop hooks, it’s a sleek and glossy sound that is gaining fans fast: their debut show at Camden Assembly last year sold out and they’ve recently played shows with the likes of K.Flay, The Aces and R.LUM.R.
New track Feast My Eye is out now via Atlantic Records’ singles label Taste & Tone and is another glistening production with bags of attitude and style. Watch out, world…
Sounds like? Giving us La Roux vibes with added grit.
Predicted to? Unveil more intoxicating tracks and grow in stature as the year progresses.
Must hear? Feast My Eye.
