Featured artist: Rina Mushonga

Who? Rina Mushonga.

What? Continent-hopping world-pop.

From where? Peckham via Rotterdam.

What’s the story? Bouncy electronic pop innovator Rina Mushonga gets her musical kicks from fusing the heritage and history of India, Zimbabwe and The Netherlands.

She crosses continents without missing a beat – serving up a perfect antidote to the rising tides of nationalism and populism.

Her debut album, The Wild, The Wilderness, landed in 2014 when she was living out her post-student days in Rotterdam. But its folk-inflected vibe didn’t tap into her true potential and identity, she felt.

Now residing in London, she’s mined the depths of her influence and inspiration, laying down her discoveries in ace new LP In a Galaxy.

Choc-full of buoyant melodies, shifting synths and Afropop beats, it serves up a smorgasbord of styles that reference everyone from Blood Orange to Baloji, Nina Simone to Sharon Van Etten.

Four years in the making, In a Galaxy sees Rina filter out her distractions and focus on her own unique abilities and instincts.

Working with Grammy Award-winning producer Brett Shaw (Foals, Lady Gaga, Florence + the Machine) and Rotterdam synth whisperer Frans Verberg, she’s turned in a clutch of intelligent, diverse tracks that redefine the boundaries of forward-thinking pop.

Sounds like? ‘Like Paul Simon in a sweaty African dancehall club’, in her own words.

Predicted to? Set the agenda for 2019 when her new LP lands in February.

Must hear? Album taster 4qrtrs

The new album, In a Galaxy, is out on 15 February. Pre-order here.
