Drop City was a community formed by a small group of American artists in 1965. They used the likes of Fluxos and John Cage to inform their work with the group’s most celebrated piece entitled The Ultimate Painting.
It’s from such arty beginnings that musical pair Ultimate Painting take their name. James Hoare and Jack Cooper hit it off when their respective bands – Veronica Falls and Mazes – were on tour together. Realising that they were two kindred spirits, the pair decided to work on songs together.
Initial plans to record a couple of tracks together quickly became an EP and then a full album. The record, which features five songs from each member, which will be issued via Chicago’s Trouble In Mind this autumn.
Influences range from the likes of Yo La Tengo to the films of Jack Nitzsche and manifest themselves in sticky, gorgeous guitar pop. The first offering – Ultimate Painting – is lovely, ramshackle, full of melody and ideas. It bodes well for the full colour rendering of their music in a debut album proper…
