The prize is open to UK-based solo artists and bands in the first two years of their professional career or who are studying on a jazz course.
Saxophonist and composer Phil Meadows won the award in 2013 and used the grant to develop cross-genre ensemble the Engines Orchestra. The orchestra are collaborating with the Phil Meadows Group to record a new suite of music Lifecycles, launching with a live performance at this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival.
Phil said: ‘The Peter Whittingham Award came at a crucial moment in my career. It’s enabled me to develop my creative ambitions and profile as a musician, composer and band leader in a way that would not otherwise have been possible. It’s kickstarted the Engines Orchestra – a project that’s moving faster than I could have ever imagined!’
The deadline for applications is Friday 7 November at 5pm. Auditions will take place at the Premises Studios, Hackney, on Thursday 4 December 2014, in front of a panel of eminent jazz musicians and experts.
