The health and wellbeing service Elevate Music, independent music charity Help Musicians and content company Wisebuddah have joined forces to create a podcast to help musicians in their careers.
Elevate Music Podcast will launch on 15 July and will cover common health and wellbeing issues musicians face while exploring how they can manage and prevent problems that may arise during their careers.
The series will concentrate on a range of themes across 15 episodes, including mental health, drugs and alcohol, social media, vocal health, stage fright, touring and hearing problems.
The first episode will be hosted by Elevate Music chief executive Lucy Heyman who will talk to Help Musicians’ head of health and welfare, Joe Hastings, and Adam Ficek (Babyshambles, psychotherapist).
Subsequent episodes will feature experts and artists like Shaun Ryder, Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets), Nina Nesbitt and Ayanna Witter-Johnson.
Lucy Heyman says: ‘Studies have shown that pop musicians feel unsupported in their careers with health and wellbeing issues, so this podcast is looking at the key topics that research tells us they need most help with. The podcast, along with the other services that Elevate Music provides, is initiating a much-needed crisis-prevention model within the industry to try and stop issues from impacting on musicians’ health in the future.” The podcast was created out of the findings of Heyman’s PhD research on this subject at the Royal College of Music.’
Nick Minter, executive producer, Wisebuddah, comments: ‘We know from research that there is a big gap in the market when it comes to knowledge and resources for popular musicians. This podcast was created as a response to that gap. Wisebuddah has quickly become one of the UK’s leading podcast providers, with a wealth of experience of working with the music industry, so we are delighted to be working with Help Musicians to support musicians in this way.’
Claire Gevaux, director of programme, Help Musicians, added: ‘Help Musicians has supported musicians for nearly 100 years. Our Health & Welfare team are on the frontline supporting thousands of individuals every year and we know that the nature of a musician’s life can be precarious, with many complex challenges that can leave them uniquely vulnerable. There is a clear need among musicians of all ages and career stages for a resource such as this and we are delighted to collaborate with Wisebuddah and Lucy Heyman to co-curate this podcast series. We hope it will bring insight and expertise and help bridge the current gap in the provision of knowledge and resources for popular musicians.’
