Great Escape: tips to kickstart your career

Are you a musician or songwriter at the start of your career? If so, get yourself along to three masterclasses at The Great Escape this Thursday, for expert advice on media, live and legal issues.

The sessions, which run from 10.35am until midday on 12 May in The Old Courthouse, Brighton, are designed for those at the start of their music career, and are supported by the Arts Council England.

First off is the media masterclass with CMU Editor Andy Malt. He will reveal exactly what journalists want when approached by new bands. Brighton-based music publicist Debbie Ball from Create Spark will also be on hand to talk about building relationships with media contacts.

The live masterclass at 11.05am will provide insight into what bookers are looking for when booking new talent, and what agents look out for when choosing to work with new acts.

Finally, Brighton law firm Acumen will run a legal masterclass for upcoming record labels, artists, managers and agents. The company’s legal team will answer the questions people ask when setting up a music business, and offer tips on copyright, recording contracts, limited companies, employing people and resolving legal disputes.

Also on Thursday, PRS for Music is hosting a panel at The Great Escape called Make it Happen, aimed at bands looking to take their careers to the next level. For more information click here.
