Jazz Refreshed

Moses Boyd, Yussef Kamaal and Gogo Penguin are among the artists heading to SXSW to play Jazz re:freshed Outernational.

The performance will launch the Jazz re:freshed Outernational project, a new two year initiative aimed at championing the artists spearheading the latest wave of UK jazz.

The partnership with British Underground will include a major stage at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin TX followed by a series of showcase events in partnership with Brooklyn-based festival promoter Afropunk in Europe and North America. The two-year showcasing programme is supported by funding from Arts Council England will feature world-class emerging UK jazz artists currently ‘shaping our understanding of the contemporary UK jazz genre’.

Commenting, drummer and composer Moses Boyd said: ‘Jazz needs the opportunity to show what has been brewing over the past couple years.

‘The scene here in the UK and America is thriving and churning out so much great forward thinking and unique approaches within the jazz umbrella. Organisations like Jazz re:freshed have been great in nurturing this and I feel audiences worldwide need to see how much good new music is out there.’

Vanessa Reed, PRS Foundation chief executive, said: ‘We are delighted to be funding GoGo Penguin and Sarathy Korwar through PRS Foundation’s International Showcase Fund – which is helping a record 37 UK artists at this year’s SXSW festival.

‘As UK jazz finally gets its turn in the spotlight, I hope that the British music industry will seize this opportunity to increase their recognition and support of UK jazz internationally and at home.’

Justin McKenzie from Jazz re:freshed added: ‘In the UK, jazz music is undergoing a revolution – where the culture and the music reflect the varying influences and times we are living in. Now is one of the most interesting and creative times for jazz globally and SXSW is a great platform to share the UK’s modern perspective.’

Moses Boyd will be joined by Yussef Kamaal, United Vibrations and Native Dancer.
