New research reveals the UK’s favourite venue

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) looked into hundreds of venues across the UK to determine the UK’s favourite music venue.

The findings were split into four categories – open air stadiums, indoor arenas, small venues, and theatres and halls – with London’ O2 Arena taking the overall crown scoring 90.63/100.

The ranking out of 100 was formed using social media followings and Tripadvisor ratings of hundreds of venues, both big and small, across the UK.

The ICMP used the list of UK venues that appears on Wikipedia in conjunction with venues found on the Independent Venue Week website.

For a venue to feature it had to have a and active Instagram hashtag, Facebook and Tripadvisor pages.

The data was then collected from those sites was collated to rank the venue’s popularity.

The ICPM then normalised the results to reach a score out of 100, with five-star reviews achieving 50 percent, review counts 25 percent, hashtag counts 12.5 percent and 12.5 percent for Facebook likes.

Although the number ones in each category achieve high scores – Old Trafford 89.29, Royal Albert Hall 80.12, The Carvern Club 82.09 – the score plummets significantly at the lower end of the top fives, with Cardiff’s Principality Stadium scoring just 34.05 and London’s National Theatre 33.64.
