Stormzy announces publishing deal to help young writers

Stormzy 2018

Grime-star Stormzy has recently announced a publishing deal with Penguin Books to help young writers become published authors.

Going by the name Merky Books, the aim of the venture is to offer support for young authors and provide a platform to get their undiscovered works seen and published.

Writing on his Instagram page, he said: ‘I know too many talented writers that don’t always have an outlet or a means to get their work seen and hopefully Merky Books can now be a reference point for them to say “I can be an author” and for that to be a realistic and achievable goal.’

‘Reading and writing as a kid was integral to where I am today and I from the bottom of my heart cannot wait to hear your stories, your poems, your novels, your sci-fi’s and then getting them out into the big wide world.’

Merky Books intends to release two or three books a year, beginning with Stormzy’s own autobiography, Rise Up.

Speaking on Instagram, Stormzy said that he was searching for new writers to work with and would be running school competitions and taking submissions.

Merky Books will also be offering a paid internship in 2019.

We recently spoke to Stormzy backstage at the Ivors 2018 about songwriting, careers and his number one debut LP, Gang Signs & Prayer.
