Playlist: Matthew Halsall

Matthew HalsallThis week we asked Mancunian trumpeter Matthew Halsall to compile a playlist for us and, perhaps unsurprisingly, were bowled over by his eclecticism. Matthew is known for his catholic approach to songwriting, drawing on a diverse palette ranging from the beats and bass of Ninja Tune and Warp Records to the classic jazz of Duke Ellington.

As well as founding and fronting his own jazz band, Matthew also DJs regularly in his home town and runs the Gondwana independent record label. Artists on his roster include Nat Birchall and GoGo Penguin, and with a series of well-received releases under its belt, Gondwana has won a legion of fans including Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum, Mr Scruff, MOJO and BBC 6 Music.

Below you can hear Matthew’s top pick of tunes old and new, including Steve Reich, Aphex Twin, Yann Tiersen, Miles Davies, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock and The Cinematic Orchestra. Plug in and get yourself sorted for a mega 53-track selection – the perfect soundtrack for a summer barbeque…
