Playlist: Piano Day

Piano Day takes place today (Friday) and welcomes all piano lovers to join in the celebrations.

German musician and composer Nils Frahm founded the event in 2015, and it takes place on the 88th day of the year, in tribute to the number of keys on the instrument.

Piano Day has mushroomed into a worldwide event that celebrates the centuries-old instrument and creates a platform for piano related projects.

Frahm comments: ‘Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.’

London is joining in with the festivities across the capital, beginning with Help Musicians UK’s partnership with High Speed One at St Pancras International, where the charity will facilitate performances on the public pianos at the station.

The Jazz Café will host a Piano Day Event with Shaun Martin, Sarah Tandy and Elliot Gavin, and St James Church will welcome Taz Modi and Izzy Flynn.

Southbank Centre celebrates with a performance from Bill Laurence and Ashley Henry, while Spanish composer Nico Casal plays the Purcell room.

Elsewhere, EartH Hackney has devoted the evening to the ivories with a lineup that includes Andrea Belfi, Luke Abbott, Jack Wyllie of Portico Quartet and Reep One.

Here at M we are honouring the piano with a playlist dedicated to the instrument and its versatility, dig in…
