Dame Evelyn Glennie is the world’s foremost solo percussionist and thought to be the first in history to sustain a full-time career from music.
The Grammy-winning percussionist and composer’s musical calling has taken her all over the globe from some of the most prestigious concert halls to leading the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
She has also become the leading commissioner of new works for solo percussion with more than 200 pieces to her name while regularly providing masterclasses and consultations on composition.
Recently recognised as a Companion of Honour in the Queen’s New Year Honours list, Dame Evelyn was also selected to be the new King’s Cross Musician in Residence by the workers, residents and students of the area.
Her plans for 2017 are focused around King’s Cross Sounds, a project that will see her working with the local community to help discover its past, present and imagined future sound of the area.
We caught up with Evelyn to find out more about the musical project and why listening is at its heart…
